Stylist Vince Theodore - Inside Scoop and Must-have Pieces

I love to write about fashion because, alas, I am style challenged. I'm never quite sure what looks good, what to buy, or how to put it all together. So what a pleasure it was to interview Bloomingdale's Old Orchard stylist and personal shopper Vince Theodore for the January issue of NS Magazine. He makes building a stylish wardrobe easy and fun. He is so enthusiastic about making women feel good about themselves, his clients begged me to write about him. Please make sure to read my story for NS online by clicking this link, but here on the blog I want to give you some extra advice from Vince. If you live in Chicago or on the North Shore, you can have Vince's expertise all to yourself - for free. Simply make an appointment with him at Bloomingdales or call him directly at 224-715-2182.

Vince has a list of seven essential pieces he recommends women use as the foundation for their wardrobe. They are:

  1. Leather Jacket
  2. Jeans
  3. Black Dress
  4. Trench Coat
  5. Blazer
  6. White blouse
  7. T-shirt/Tank

The style of each of these pieces will vary depending on a woman's shape, lifestyle and fashion preferences and Vince spends a lot of time getting to know his clients to determine what will make them feel most fabulous. "You can wear anything, no matter your age or body type, if it's put together the right way," he says. During our interview, Vince shared some of his favorite brands and styles with me. Here's the behind the scenes scoop.

His favorite leather jacket is this moto jacket by Allsaints because it has an edgy look without too much hardware. This jacket retails for $560, which is a reasonable price point for quality leather.

Vince built his reputation as the Bloomingdale's jeans expert and his favorite skinny jeans right now are by DL1961. The fabric has some give which makes them comfortable and fit perfectly without getting stretched out. This style is called Warner and retails for  $178.

Vince is a huge fan of the brand Theory for their quality fabrics and modern tailoring. He raves about these two pieces - the Tenia white blouse ( $245) and Clairene black wool/cashmere topper, originally $595 -but check the website, because it may be on sale now!

Another piece that has been working well for many of Vince's clients is this Allsaints Keld Olivo V Neck Sweater. It doesn't look like much on the hanger, but apparently the diagonal cut is super flattering. Originally $230.

Once you have the wardrobe staples on hand, Vince says it's easy to create a wide number of looks by mixing in accessories and trendier pieces. Thanks for the great advice, Vince, and for being such a fun interview. If any of you readers work with Vince, please share your stories here. I'll be booking my own personal shopping appointment soon!
